Transforming Science. Transforming Life.
On average, it can take approximately 10 to 15 years to develop a new medicine from discovery until the time it is available to patients. For the millions of people around the world suffering with disease, that’s not fast enough. The pioneering biomedical research supported and advanced by the Chemistry of Life Processes Institute offers hope for faster development and delivery of new ways to detect and treat cancer, neurodegenerative diseases like ALS and Parkinson’s, addiction, HIV and other life-threatening illnesses. There are few other biomedical research institutes in the world like CLP that integrate the breadth of the physical sciences – from physics to engineering to chemistry – with the life sciences and medicine to develop 21st century therapeutics and diagnostics. Each day our transdisciplinary teams of scientists, engineers and physicians work together using CLP’s shared resources, cutting-edge facilities and translational expertise to improve human health and bring new discoveries to society. We are also educating the next generation of scientists to think and act across disciplines to address the “big questions” underlying human health and disease. Together, we are working on discoveries and creative solutions that will improve lives, communities and the world.
A Foundation for the Future
Consistent funding is needed to help CLP researchers move their discoveries from the laboratory into society. Your investment in CLP will help catalyze the next wave of transdisciplinary team science, provide cutting-edge tools and instrumentation and expand training of future scientists.

In Memoriam - Dr. Merle Bennett Haney, 1926-2019
We’d like to express our gratitude to the family of Dr. Merle “Ben” Haney, M.D. of Almont, Michigan, 1926-2019, who earned his Doctorate of Medicine in 1954 from Northwestern University. Dr. Haney was a general surgeon and practitioner, but one of his greatest joys was his OB-GYN practice. The Chemistry of Life Processes Institute was listed as an option for those wishing to make memorial contributions. Donations like these help advance the mission of the Institute: to accelerate research and development of new ways to detect, diagnose and treat diseases like cancer, neurodegenerative disease, heart disease and other disorders.
“It is my Dad’s belief that Northwestern University will be the first to come up with a cure for cancer.” – Beth Haney-Heckart (daughter)
