The Cornew Innovation Fund

One of the ways in which the Institute fosters new team science is through The Cornew Innovation Fund, a pilot project program named after founding CLP Executive Advisory Board member, Stuart Cornew, Managing Director, AnswerMine, who tirelessly contributes to the mission of the Institute. The Fund supports potentially high-value, high-risk research at the juncture of multiple disciplines.  Our annual Cornew Innovation Awards program, made possible by the generous support of the CLP Executive Advisory Board, provides seed money to jump-start promising multi-disciplinary research.

The impact of these activities on collaboration and interdisciplinary research activity and training at Northwestern is unmistakable. Since the program’s inception in 2010, CLP has distributed 21 Cornew Innovation Awards, approximately $900,000 in pilot project funding, to teams of CLP investigators. This funding has resulted in 39 publications, 9 patents, and more than $18 million in new external funding to advance these projects. More importantly, they have opened up critical areas of transdisciplinary research, resulting in discoveries, including early diagnostics for lung cancer, new surgical adhesives, development of treatments for neurodegenerative diseases, new technologies for fostering growth of vein grafts and surprising new insights into the earliest stages of fertilization and embryonic development.
